Montreal, November 28, 2019<\/strong> \u2013 The second annual Official College and University Scholarship Evening presented by RDS<\/strong> in collaboration with TKNL<\/strong>, organized by the Foundation for Athletic Excellence (FAEQ)<\/strong> in partnership with the RSEQ<\/strong>, a permis d\u2019octroyer 434 000 $ en bourses individuelles aux meilleurs \u00e9tudiants-athl\u00e8tes coll\u00e9giaux et universitaires du Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n

The Foundation took advantage of its flagship event dedicated to its student-athlete scholarship recipients to announce that it has financially supported no fewer than 81 young college and university students who distinguished themselves academically, athletically, or through social involvement during the 2018-2019 season.<\/p>\n

The FAEQ has awarded, among other things, 20 college recruitment scholarships of $3,000 $over 3 years, as well as 32 university recruitment scholarships of $10,000 $ over 5 years. Additionally, 2 student-athletes from outside Quebec who wish to pursue their studies at a Quebec university received a scholarship of $3,000 $. Finally, 21 merit scholarships of $2,000 $ were given to 19 student-athletes who were finalists in the 7 award categories at the Official College and University Scholarship Gala, in recognition of their accomplishments during the 2018-2019 season.<\/p>\n

\u00abIn 2018, when we redesigned our college and university recruitment programs to prevent the exodus of our best student-athletes, we wanted to present a competitive offer to what exists outside of Quebec. After one year, we are already reaping some rewards from our work, and we feel a much better reception from student-athletes,\u00bb said Patricia Demers, Executive Director of the Foundation for Athletic Excellence. \u00abOur new structure now allows us to support their academic and athletic progress for eight years. We believe this is a meaningful proposition for our local student-athletes, and that more and more of them will embrace it.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Held at the John Molson Hall of the Brewery Molson<\/strong>, A partner of the Foundation for nearly 35 years, the second annual Official College and University Scholarship Evening unveiled the winners in seven award categories.<\/p>\n

WINNERS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Female Student-Athlete of the Year in the category Molson Foundation Academic Excellence<\/strong> is Jessika Boulanger<\/strong> (chemical engineering) in hockey with the University of Montreal Carabins.<\/strong>The Victoriaville forward earned 21 credits and a GPA of 4.0 out of 4.3. A RSEQ Quebec champion with the Carabins, she won a bronze medal with her team at the U SPORTS Canadian University Championship. She was named to the RSEQ All-Rookie Team.<\/p>\n

Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the category Molson Coors Canada Academic Excellence<\/strong> is Francis Carter<\/strong> struggling with Concordia University Stingers.<\/strong> The Montrealer achieved perfection with an academic average of 4.3 out of 4.3 and earned 24 credits. He won the gold medal in the under 68 kg category at the U SPORTS Canadian Championships. He was also honored with the Governor General's Canadian Academic All-Canadian award for balancing sports and academics.<\/p>\n

Female Student-Athlete of the Year in the category Individual Sport RDS <\/strong>is Jessy Lacourse<\/strong> (preschool education and primary school teaching) in athletics and cross-country with the Laval University Red and Gold<\/strong>. The Quebec resident was named Athlete of the Year at the RSEQ University Championships after winning the 1500m, 3000m, and 4x800m races. Also a Quebec cross-country champion, she won gold in the 3000m indoor race and silver in the 4x800m at the Canadian university championships.<\/p>\n

Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the category Individual Sport RDS <\/strong>is Francis Carter<\/strong> struggling with Concordia University Stingers<\/strong>. Female Student-Athlete of the Year in the category National Bank Team Sport<\/strong> is Claire Vercheval<\/strong> (physical education instruction) in volleyball with theMcGill University Martlets<\/strong>. Named RSEQ and U SPORTS Player of the Year, she played in all 75 of her team's sets in 2018-2019, racking up 231 kills and 34 aces. Also a member of the Quebec and Canadian All-Star teams, she finished the provincial championship with a silver medal around her neck.<\/p>\n

Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the category Team Sports Government of Quebec<\/strong> is Omar Kreim<\/strong> (law) in soccer with the Carabins of the University of Montreal. The adopted Montrealer was part of a superb season for the Carabins, Quebec and Canadian university champions. His performances also earned him nominations to the RSEQ and U SPORTS All-Star teams, as well as the University National Championship team.<\/p>\n

Female Student-Athlete of the Year in the category Leadership Gildan<\/strong> is Frederique Cigna<\/strong> (medicine) in swimming with the Carabins of the University of Montreal. The Montrealer organized a swim-a-thon for the benefit of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation in honor of her late mother. No less than 109 participants and about ten volunteers took part in this event, which took place in November 2018. The activity raised $13,904 $ for the cause.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
