Providing support to dismantle obstacles: $30,000 $ awarded to young hockey athletes

Sep 18, 2024 | Scholarship award

Montreal, September 18, 2024 The first 13 recipients of the Le BUT Foundation program, within the Aléo Foundation, experienced a magical moment during the scholarship presentation at the Sports Rousseau store in Laval on the evening of September 18. Called before a massive wall of NHL hockey jerseys by Pierre Gendron, receiving their own program jersey, and being welcomed into the Aléo family, the experience gave the young people wings in the pursuit of their passion.

Specifically, the 13 student-athletes identified as “Espoir” each received a scholarship of 1,500 $ and became eligible for all the services provided by the Aléo Foundation team for life.

The Le BUT Foundation and the Aléo Foundation share several commonalities, including the promotion of access to sports. Thus, the two foundations have joined forces to create a new scholarship program aimed at supporting young male and female hockey and para-hockey players with high potential who face barriers to access in order to succeed.

Two additional fellows through the program Give to the following

In addition to the scholarships awarded via the Fondation Le BUT, Pierre Gendron also personally offered two other scholarships to university hockey student-athletes as part of the program Give to the following from the Aléo Foundation.

Thus, this former Aléo Foundation scholar, founder and president of the Le BUT Foundation, has doubled down on his natural alliance with this foundation by supporting 15 young people and student-athletes. Supported in the 1990s, he is now providing athletes of the current generation with support that will enable them to advance toward their dreams.

In their own words:

«Achieving great goals, whether in sports or elsewhere, requires a tremendous amount of determination. And beyond all the efforts one can deploy, often, a helping hand at the right moment is also needed. Like the young recipients encouraged today, I had help to achieve my goals. Without this help, including that of the Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec (now Aléo), I wouldn't have been able to reach professional hockey. The Fondation Le BUT collects and redistributes hockey equipment in addition to paying registration fees when necessary. Now teaming up with the Aléo Foundation, we are going even further to help talented young male and female hockey players continue in the sport they love. Sometimes, it's the necessary rebound to clear the hurdle and move on to the next step. That is what I wish for them.»

– Pierre Gendron, founder and president of the Le BUT Foundation

«This scholarship presentation could not be more aligned with Aléo Foundation's new initiatives. Two programs have recently been launched, namely Give to the following, in which former scholarship holders choose in turn to award scholarships to the next generation, as well as’Next Generation Access, which exclusively targets talented student-athletes who face obstacles in reaching the next level of their athletic and academic development. Together with the Fondation Le BUT and Pierre Gendron, we made these two types of support a reality today, thereby allowing 15 new student-athletes to join the great Aléo family.»

– Patricia Demers, Managing Director of the Aléo Foundation

About the Le BUT Foundation
Launched on September 21, 2022, La Le But Foundation has distributed more than 1,000 pairs of skates. Whether in the Greater Montreal area or even in certain more remote regions, the Foundation is making a difference in the lives of many hockey players. With the goal of making hockey accessible to youth of all ages and thus getting them moving and socializing, the foundation collects used hockey equipment and reallocates it to players in need. Raising funds is the Foundation's second objective, with these funds helping to cover certain registration and development costs.

About the Aléo Foundation
Created in 1985, the Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence (FAEQ) has awarded more than $25 million in bursaries to nearly 5,000 outstanding student-athletes from all over Quebec. With the goal of clarifying the organization's mission—which aims to propel athletes beyond sport—the FAEQ changed its name and brand image in 2022; it is now called Aléo Foundation. In addition to continuing to award scholarships and provide support services to the leaders of tomorrow, it reaffirms its personalized approach, where the overall development and well-being in performance of its scholarship recipients are at the heart of its actions.
