Montreal, May 13, 2020 – On the occasion of the 16th edition of the Cascades Scholarship Program within the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence (FAEQ), Mr. Mario Plourde, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cascades, confirmed that the company is continuing its support for student-athletes in Quebec by awarding $80,000 $ in individual scholarships to 21 of them.
Given the very particular social distancing situation that has led to the closure of several training centers, our young student-athletes need financial support, encouragement, and guidance more than ever to remain engaged and motivated for the upcoming season. It is therefore during a virtual scholarship awards ceremony live on Facebook that the FAEQ, in conjunction with Cascades, proceeded to unveil the 2020 recipients.
Since its inception in 2005, the program has been a true success. Several of its scholarship recipients have distinguished themselves on the national, international, and Olympic sports scenes, such as Alexandre Bilodeau, Mikaël Kingsbury, Alex Harvey, Eugenie Bouchard, Élisabeth and Françoise Abanda, Émilie and Hugues Fournel, Marc-Antoine and Alex-Anne Gagnon, Maryse Turcotte and nearly a hundred others.
In 2020, individual scholarships of $2000 $ or $4000 $ were awarded in four categories: 6 for academic excellence, highlighting outstanding academic results; 12 for academic and athletic support, promoting the balance of sports and studies; 2 for perseverance, recognizing special determination in the face of difficult circumstances; and 1 for university recruitment, encouraging the pursuit of studies and an athletic career at a Quebec university.
What they said:
«In these times of instability and uncertainty, our amateur athletes need this financial support and our encouragement more than ever. For the female and male stunt performers, they are role models of self-improvement who inspire healthy lifestyles and well-being. We are happy to stand by them.»
– Mario Plourde, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cascades
«We consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to count on companies as loyal and reliable as Cascades. In this period of the unknown and uncertainty, our scholarship recipients need to feel supported and guided, and thanks to Cascades and the support services offered by the FAEQ to all our scholarship recipients, we can continue to fulfill our mission during this time when we all need to be united and supportive. Thank you, Cascades!»
– Claude Chagnon, President of the Athletes' Foundation
