Kingsey Falls, April 17, 2019 – Mario Plourde, President and CEO of Cascades, confirmed on Wednesday the renewal of the partnership between Cascades and the Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence (FAEQ) for a period of three years. This new investment by the company will total 300,000 $ and will extend the Cascades Scholarship Program from 2020 to 2022.
The announcement was made during the 15th edition of the FAEQ’s Cascades Scholarship Program, held at Marie-Victorin Park in Kingsey Falls. Mr. Plourde and the FAEQ recognized the academic and athletic achievements of 22 recipients, aged 15 to 28, who shared a total of 84,000 $ today.
Since its inception in 2005, the program has been a resounding success. Several of its recipients have distinguished themselves on the national, international, and Olympic sports stages, notably being crowned Canadian, Pan American, Commonwealth, World, and even Olympic champions.
Among the 22 recipients in 2019, the performances of Frédérique Turgeon should also be highlighted, as she reached the podium three times at the World Para Alpine Skiing Championships in her very first experience. The 20-year-old athlete also stocked up on World Cup medals, notably in La Molina, Spain, where she collected four out of a possible five.
In 2019, individual scholarships of 2,000 $ or 4,000 $ were awarded in four categories: 10 for academic excellence, recognizing outstanding academic performance, 10 scholarships for academic and athletic success, promoting the balance between sports and studies; 1 scholarship for perseverance, recognizing exceptional determination in the face of a difficult situation; and 1 college recruitment scholarship, encouraging the pursuit of both academic studies and an athletic career at a Quebec CEGEP.
