Montreal, September 10, 2025 – Girls' basketball players will be recognized through Basketball Québec's new scholarship program, administered by the Aléo Foundation. Starting this fall, five scholarships of 2,000 $ will be awarded to players who demonstrate leadership on their teams and in their basketball communities.
Initiated by Basketball Québec, this scholarship program aims to encourage student-athletes playing on a Division 1 collegiate or university team who demonstrate leadership qualities among their teammates as well as in their immediate environment.
«Our goal is to encourage these young women to continue on their leadership path and, in doing so, become ambassadors for our sport. We want to give them a helping hand so that their passion for the sport continues for many years, even beyond playing, as officials, coaches, or managers, after their athletic careers,» described Max Zuyderhoff-Craig, president of Basketball Québec.

Robert Comeau Scholarship
As part of the program Give to the following from the Aléo Foundation, another basketball scholarship is being created this year. The Comeau family is becoming a donor for the Robert Comeau Scholarship, in honor of the patriarch, an iconic figure of basketball in Quebec.
This scholarship will be awarded annually to a promising student-athlete in basketball who combines great athletic talent with leadership at the heart of their team. The first Robert Comeau Scholarship will be presented during a significant basketball event in the coming months.
Robert Comeau is the co-founder of the Quebec Basketball Federation and was the head coach of the gold-medal-winning Quebec teams at the 1971 and 1975 Canada Games. His vision for basketball in Quebec was ahead of its time. In addition to serving as technical director and general manager of Basketball Québec, he stepped behind the microphone as an analyst for the Olympic Games and became the voice of basketball on television, notably coining his famous phrase «Downtown!» to describe three-point shots. «Mr. Basketball» was a central pillar in the development of his sport in Quebec.

Our goal of propelling athletes beyond sport so that they become agents of change in their communities directly matches the encouragement of leadership. We often talk about the leaders of tomorrow to enrich our society, and this is an example of what we can do together to encourage them,» concluded Patricia Demers, Executive Director of the Fondation Aléo.
