Montreal, February 20, 2019 The Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence (FAEQ) today unveiled the names of the 52 student-athletes who make up the 19th cohort of the Saputo Scholarship Program, who will share a total of $150,000 $.
Saputo is proud to support distinguished student-athletes and emerging talent. Role models in our society across the country and around the world, these young people are constantly striving for success, and their development deserves to be supported. Furthermore, Saputo places the promotion of healthy lifestyles and the importance of staying active at the core of its values.
«It is a privilege to be able to collaborate so closely with Saputo, a prestigious sponsor for nearly two decades,» stated Claude Chagnon, President of the Foundation for Athletic Excellence. «Its support for the province's student-athletes continues to grow and reached a new high of $150,000 this year $. We should also highlight its commitment to other activities, particularly the Défi 808 Bonneville. We warmly thank Saputo for its support.»
Many Saputo scholarship recipients have distinguished themselves since the program's inception in 2000, with several doing so in recent months. Snowboarder Laurie Blouin, for example, was crowned champion at the X Games Big Air event in January during her first appearance at the prestigious competition. This gold medal is in addition to the silver medal she won in slopestyle at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018.
We can also highlight the signing of the first professional contract of soccer player Mathieu Choinière with the MLS's Montreal Impact last summer, the bronze medal of weightlifter Tali Darsigny at the 2018 Junior World Championships, and the second-place finish on the still rings by gymnast Félix Dolci at the Youth Olympic Games last fall.
Meaghan Benfeito in diving, Félix Auger-Aliassime in tennis, and sisters Justine and Chloé Dufour-Lapointe in freestyle skiing, also former Saputo scholarship recipients, continue to shine on the international stage.
Scholarships of three types were awarded: academic excellence scholarships recognizing excellent academic results, academic and sports success support scholarships encouraging the balance of sports and studies, and perseverance scholarships recognizing this attitude in the face of challenges.
